Besides the well known Skogafoss waterfall, there are about 24 beautiful waterfalls more upstream. This is one of them, half way the hiking trail to Thorsmork.
Another view and a part of the beautiful Godafoss waterfall in Northern Iceland.
Dettifoss is a waterfall in Jökulsárgljúfur National Park of Northeast Iceland, not far from Mývatn. It is situated on the Jökulsá á Fjöllum river, which flows from the Vatnajökull glacier and collects water from a large area in Northeast Iceland. The falls are 100 m wide and have a drop of 44 m down to the Jökulsárgljúfur canyon. It is the largest waterfall in Europe in terms of volume discharge, having an average water flow of 200 m3/s. The waterfall can only be reached by a rough road.
Eiders (ducks) are very common in Iceland and in the rest of the arctic area in summertime. It breeds in Arctic and some northern temperate regions, but winters somewhat farther south in temperate zones, when it can form large flocks on coastal waters.
Windspeeds of 30 m/sec, blowing ashes from the Eyjafjalla volcano and very dark clouds were the ingredients for this photo. I took this one on the ringroad in southern Iceland. In the distance you can see the Lómagnúpur mountain.
Just a little east from Skaftafell, heavy storms and rain was following me. Just 5 minutes time to make a picture on the borderline between rain and sun, before it started pouring down. Than a jump into the car for about 1 km to shoot the next couple of photo's. I had the feeling being some kind of a storm chaser.
Another spectacular view in the direction of Lómagnúpur, southern Iceland. This is one of those special moments you've been waiting for, hour after hour.
Reynisdrangar are basalt sea stacks situated under the mountain Reynisfjall near the village Vík í Mýrdal, southern Iceland.
According to legend the Reynisdrangar needles were formed when two trolls were trying to drag a three-masted ship to land. When daylight broke they turned to stone. The Needles can be seen clearly from the village of Vík and are 66 meters above sea level at their highest. In one of the many caves here ? there is a local legend about a monster having lived here for many centuries. The monster seems to have disappeared after a landslide over 100 years ago?
Skógafoss is a waterfall situated in the south of Iceland at the cliffs of the former coastline. The Skógafoss is one of the biggest waterfalls of the country with a width of 25 meters and a drop of 60 meters. Due to the amount of spray the waterfall consistently produces, a single or double rainbow is normally visible on sunny days.
This is a special one. Due to very heavy storms at the Jökulsárlón area, very large iceblocks (3 meters high) where thrown on the black beaches. These Iceblock series is part of the black & white ones, but I wanted to keep the nice blue ice colors in the B&W photo. Just combine this one with one or more from these series, and you have a special and unique artwork for your home or office wall. And for those who are interested, this ice is over a thousend years old, once fallen as snow on the Vatnajokull glacier, than changed to very compact ice by the glaciers pressure. At the end of the glacier, large iceblocks break down into the Jokulsarlon lake where they melt untill they are small enough to flow through the Jökulsá river and finaly given back to the sea.

The Goðafoss is one of the most spectacular waterfalls in Iceland. It is located in the Mývatn district of North-Central Iceland at the beginning of the Sprengisandur highland road. The water of the river Skjálfandafljót falls from a height of 12 meters over a width of 30 meters.

Mývatn is a shallow eutrophic lake situated in an area of active volcanism in the north of Iceland, not far from Krafla volcano. The lake and its surrounding wetlands have an exceptionally rich fauna of waterbirds, especially ducks. The lake was created by a large basaltic lava eruption 2300 years ago, and the surrounding landscape is dominated by volcanic landforms, including lava pillars and rootless vents (pseudocraters).

Eiders are large seaducks in the genus Somateria. Steller's Eider, despite its name, is in a different genus. The three extant species all breed in the cooler latitudes of the Northern hemisphere. The down feathers of eider ducks, and some other ducks and geese, are used to fill pillows and quilts, they have given the name to the type of quilt known as an eiderdown.
The Whooper Swan (Cygnus cygnus) is a large Northern Hemisphere swan. It is the Eurasian counterpart of the North American Trumpeter Swan. I shot this one at the east-coast of Iceland. As far as my eyes could reach, i saw more than twohundred swans, until they disappear in the fog.
When houses in Iceland are in poor maintenance, the residents build a new home on their own land. The old houses remain standing just to become a ruin.
Svartifoss (Black Fall) is a waterfall in Skaftafell National Park in Iceland, and is one of the most popular sights in the park. It is surrounded by dark lava columns, which give rise to its name. The hexagonal columns were formed inside a lava flow which cooled extremely slowly, giving rise to crystallization. Similar well-known lava formations are seen at the Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland, and on the island of Staffa in Scotland.
The base of this waterfall is noteworthy for its sharp rocks. New hexagonal column sections break off faster than the falling water wears down the edges. These basalt columns have provided inspiration for Icelandic architects, most visibly in the Hallgrímskirkja church in Reykjavík, and also the National Theatre.
The Svinafellsjökull is a glacier east from the more famous Skaftafellsjökull in the Skaftafell National Park. It is possible to book a guided tour on the glacier at the Skaftafell parking area.
A few km's to the east from Skaftafell National Park, you'll find the Svínafell area. Also the Svínafelljokull (glacier) is part of this area. The Svínfellings (or Svínfellingar) were a family clan in the medieval Icelandic Commonwealth. They ruled the Eastfjords of Iceland. Their forefather was Flosi, one of the Burners of Njal. Their name is derived from the clan's Svínafell homestead in Öræfi. In the back of this photo, you can see the Skaftafell National Park on the right and the Lomagnupur mountain on the left.

Landmannalaugar (Icelandic, meaning the people's pools) is a region near the volcano Hekla in southern section of Iceland's highlands. The Landmannalaugar area is a popular tourist destination and hiking hub in Iceland's highlands. The area displays a number of unusual geological elements, like the multicolored rhyolite mountains and expansive lava fields, not far from the service center. The many mountains in the surrounding area display a wide spectrum of colors including pink, brown, green, yellow, blue, purple, black, and white. Two of the most popular mountains among hikers are Bláhnúkur (meaning "blue peak") and Brennisteinsalda (meaning "sulphur wave").
Landmannaluagar is a popular tourist destination. Tourists visit the area from June through late September, after which time the road is closed. A mountain lodge, in operation since 1951, can accommodate 78 people and has basic amenities. It is located centrally near natural geothermal hot springs, also popul
