“De Nachtwacht (Night Watch)”
Rembrandt van RijnNight Watch or The Night Watch or The Shooting Company of Frans Banning Cocq (De Nachtwacht in Dutch) is the common name of one of the most famous works by Dutch painter Rembrandt van Rijn.
This painting was completed in 1642, at the peak of the Dutch Golden Age. It depicts the eponymous company moving out, led by Captain Frans Banning Cocq (dressed in black, with a red sash) and his lieutenant, Willem van Ruytenburch (dressed in yellow, with a white sash). With effective use of sunlight and shade, Rembrandt leads the eye to the three most important characters among the crowd, the two gentlemen in the centre (from whom the painting gets its original title), and the small girl in the centre left background. Behind them the company's colours are carried by the ensign, Jan Visscher Cornelissen.
The militiamen were also called Arquebusiers, after the arquebus, a sixteenth-century long-barrelled gun.

“The Girl with a Pearl Earring”

After more than a century of study, the work still poses significant questions. Who was the sitter and was the painting even intended as a portrait? Why had it remained in complete obscurity until it was rediscovered in 1882 and sold for the price of a reproduction? Was it a part of a pendant? Did Vermeer sell the painting during his lifetime? Why was the original background a deep transparent green rather than the black we see today? Was the pearl a real one? What significance did the turban have? Which painting procedures did Vermeer employ? Which pigments did he use?

“Napoleon Crossing the Alps”

Napoleon Crossing the Alps is the title given to the five versions of an oil on canvas equestrian portrait of Napoleon Bonaparte painted by the French artist Jacques-Louis David between 1801 and 1805. Initially commissioned by the king of Spain, the composition shows a strongly idealized view of the real crossing that Napoleon and his army made across the Alps through the Great St. Bernard Pass in May 1800.
“Anna van Buren”
Dutch Art MastersAnna van Egmont (Grave, March 1533 - Breda, 24 March 1558) was a wealthy Dutch heiress who became the first wife of William the Silent, Prince of Orange.
As the only child of Maximiliaan van Egmond and Françoise de Lannoy, she was suo jure Countess of Buren and Lady of Egmond. She was also Countess of Lingen and of Leerdam, and Lady of IJsselstein, of Borssele, of Grave, of Cranendonck, of Jaarsveld, of Kortgene, of Sint Maartensdijk, and of Odijk.
In 1551 she married William the Silent in Buren, and thereby he earned the titles Lord of Egmond and Count of Buren. By William she had three children.

“Laughing Cavalier”
Dutch Art MastersThe Laughing Cavalier (1624) is a famous painting by the Dutch Baroque artist Frans Hals. The current title is a Victorian era invention; the subject does, in fact, sport an enigmatic smile. The composition is lively and spontaneous, and despite the apparent labour involved in the gorgeous silk costume, close inspection reveals long, quick brush strokes.
The identity of the man is unknown; when the painting was acquired in 1865 by Richard Wallace's father it was simply called "Portrait of a Young Man". The most likely theory is that the man is in fact a minor Dutch noble from Haarlem.
The painting is famous because of the artist's skill at painting the lace of the costume and that the eyes appear to follow the viewer from every angle.
“Mona Lisa”
Dutch Art MastersMona Lisa (also known as La Gioconda or La Joconde) is a sixteenth-century portrait painted in oil on a poplar panel in Florence, Italy by Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci during the Renaissance. The work is currently owned by the Government of France and is on display at the Musée du Louvre museum in Paris under the title Portrait of Lisa Gherardini, wife of Francesco del Giocondo.
The painting is a half-length portrait and depicts a seated woman whose facial expression is frequently described as enigmatic. Others believe that the slight smile is an indication that the subject is hiding a secret. The ambiguity of the subject's expression, the monumentality of the composition, and the subtle modeling of forms and atmospheric illusionism were novel qualities that have contributed to the continuing fascination and study of the work.

“Lucretia”
Dutch Art MastersLucretia is a legendary figure in the history of the Roman Republic. According to the story, told mainly by the Roman historian Livy and the Greek historian Dionysius of Halicarnassus (who lived in Rome at the time of the Roman Emperor Caesar Augustus), her rape by the king's son and consequent suicide were the immediate cause of the revolution that overthrew the monarchy and established the Roman Republic. The incident kindled the flames of dissatisfaction over the tyrannical methods of the last king of Rome, Lucius Tarquinius Superbus. As a result, the prominent families instituted a republic, drove the extensive Tarquin family from Rome, and successfully defended the republic against attempted Etruscan and Latin intervention. The rape has been a major theme in European art and literature.
