Besides the well known Skogafoss waterfall, there are about 24 beautiful waterfalls more upstream. This is one of them, half way the hiking trail to Thorsmork.
Another view and a part of the beautiful Godafoss waterfall in Northern Iceland.
Dettifoss is a waterfall in Jökulsárgljúfur National Park of Northeast Iceland, not far from Mývatn. It is situated on the Jökulsá á Fjöllum river, which flows from the Vatnajökull glacier and collects water from a large area in Northeast Iceland. The falls are 100 m wide and have a drop of 44 m down to the Jökulsárgljúfur canyon. It is the largest waterfall in Europe in terms of volume discharge, having an average water flow of 200 m3/s. The waterfall can only be reached by a rough road.
Eiders (ducks) are very common in Iceland and in the rest of the arctic area in summertime. It breeds in Arctic and some northern temperate regions, but winters somewhat farther south in temperate zones, when it can form large flocks on coastal waters.
Windspeeds of 30 m/sec, blowing ashes from the Eyjafjalla volcano and very dark clouds were the ingredients for this photo. I took this one on the ringroad in southern Iceland. In the distance you can see the Lómagnúpur mountain.
Just a little east from Skaftafell, heavy storms and rain was following me. Just 5 minutes time to make a picture on the borderline between rain and sun, before it started pouring down. Than a jump into the car for about 1 km to shoot the next couple of photo's. I had the feeling being some kind of a storm chaser.
Another spectacular view in the direction of Lómagnúpur, southern Iceland. This is one of those special moments you've been waiting for, hour after hour.
Reynisdrangar are basalt sea stacks situated under the mountain Reynisfjall near the village Vík í Mýrdal, southern Iceland.
According to legend the Reynisdrangar needles were formed when two trolls were trying to drag a three-masted ship to land. When daylight broke they turned to stone. The Needles can be seen clearly from the village of Vík and are 66 meters above sea level at their highest. In one of the many caves here ? there is a local legend about a monster having lived here for many centuries. The monster seems to have disappeared after a landslide over 100 years ago?
Skógafoss is a waterfall situated in the south of Iceland at the cliffs of the former coastline. The Skógafoss is one of the biggest waterfalls of the country with a width of 25 meters and a drop of 60 meters. Due to the amount of spray the waterfall consistently produces, a single or double rainbow is normally visible on sunny days.
This is a special one. Due to very heavy storms at the Jökulsárlón area, very large iceblocks (3 meters high) where thrown on the black beaches. These Iceblock series is part of the black & white ones, but I wanted to keep the nice blue ice colors in the B&W photo. Just combine this one with one or more from these series, and you have a special and unique artwork for your home or office wall. And for those who are interested, this ice is over a thousend years old, once fallen as snow on the Vatnajokull glacier, than changed to very compact ice by the glaciers pressure. At the end of the glacier, large iceblocks break down into the Jokulsarlon lake where they melt untill they are small enough to flow through the Jökulsá river and finaly given back to the sea.

A triplet of towers, build in 1989. Each has a name of its own, tribute to the Dutch ships (Clipper, Schoener & Galjoen are all types of ship) sailing the world in the era of their trade empire. Designed by Klunder Architecten, they are situated near the Maas river in Rotterdam.
