Lein Kaland was born in 1954 in Vlissingen and started drawing at an early age. After secondary school he went to the Academy of Visual Arts in Arnhem where he came into contact with other techniques and artistic expressions and began to apply these disciplines. He began to study lithography (the old-fashioned lithograph), woodcuts and the technique of etching and engraving. At the same time he studied 'Photography and Film' at the Free Academy Psychopolis in The Hague with a.o. Frans Zwartjes. Various exhibitions followed. After the academy he started teaching at a creative centre in Helmond, but in 1978 he was deployed as a photographer due to military service. After his military service he worked for 5 years at a publishing company for fashion- and technical magazines. He followed master classes at Broncolor and Sinar in Switzerland, for working with light setups and the Technical Camera. In 1984 Lein Kaland started his own business as an advertising and industrial photographer and up to now he works as an image maker for advertising campaigns in Alphen aan den Rijn. Lein Kaland has always been an early adopter of the developments in the field of digital photography. Already in 1991 he followed a masterclass for digital photography at the Willem de Koning Academy in Rotterdam. Nowadays he also gives workshops in his own studio and at ParkExpressie in Alphen aan den Rijn.
