Called Den Bosch, is the capital of the Dutch municipality of 's-Hertogenbosch. It is also the capital of the province of Noord-Brabant, of which it is the fourth largest city in terms of population of 110,445 (2018) (after Eindhoven, Tilburg and Breda). The entire municipality has around 154,205 inhabitants. The city is a former garrison city and furthermore the seat of the diocese of 's-Hertogenbosch.
In 1184, 's-Hertogenbosch received city rights from Count Godfried III of Leuven, who was also Duke of Lower Lorraine as Godfried VII. Some time before, it was created on the territory of Orthen as a settlement of traders at the confluence of the Aa and the Dommel, who now come together at the Citadel in the city. It was the fourth city of Duchy of Brabant. The earliest mention of 's-Hertogenbosch is in a document from 1196. It is one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands. In 1629 's-Hertogenbosch was conquered by Frederik Hendrik after a siege.
From April 13 to May 17, 1809, Lodewijk Napoleon made an inspection trip through the Noord-Brabant department. During this trip the king visited 's-Hertogenbosch. During his visit, the king showed a great deal of interest in infrastructure, care for the poor, churches, culture and industry.
